Jean-Louis Scherrer studied fashion at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris. In 1955, he began working at the house of Dior alongside Yves St. Laurent. It was at Dior that he perfected his cutting and draping skills. In 1957, Scherrer left Dior when St. Laurent was appointed head designer after Dior’s death. He designed at Louis Ferraud until 1961.
In 1962, Scherrer began his own couture house. His garments were classic and restrained and he was known for his elegant evening wear. Sherrer started a ready-to-wear line in 1971.
In 1992, the house was sold to Seibu of Japan. France Luxury Group bought the house of Jean-Louis Scherrer in 2001.
